Montgomery: The 803 monuments to “racial terror lynchings” in America at The National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery are all the same level hanging from the ceiling, but the walkway spirals lower and lower. As you walk along and read them you bend your neck more and more to see the monuments above and pretty quick your neck starts to hurt. A step or two after that you realize; what a brilliant design.
The power of the memorial opened in 2018 is in large part due to thorough research. It records more than 4,000 hangings in America between 1877 and 1950. That is only a handful of “the countless thousands” because most were not recorded. Research continues.
